The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Minister in Wales and Northern Ireland are looking to appoint a Deputy Chair and member of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The Deputy Chair appointment is a joint appointment by Ministers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The FSA has a statutory remit to protect public health and the interests of consumers in relation to food safety and standards.

As Deputy Chair/member of the FSA, you will be responsible for ensuring the FSA discharges its statutory duties.  You will also set and reinforce the FSA’s core values through the development and monitoring of strategic objectives, plans, and policies; and monitor the performance of the executive. 

You will be required to effectively contribute at Board Meetings and participate in one or more of the Board Committees; and represent the FSA in communications with key stakeholders.

In addition to the above, for the role of Deputy Chair you will 

Deputise as necessary for the Chair over the full range of their responsibilities.

Act as a conduit between the Chair and board members, ensuring effective communication, fostering open debate and supporting full participation of board members.

Provide support and foster productive relations between the Executive and Non-Executive Board Members. 

To be considered for either the Deputy Chair or member role you must have experience of working with, or on behalf of the public and an ability to represent consumer interests.  

You will have a strong career track record of significant delivery at a senior level, and ability to operate effectively as part of a team on the board of a national public body.  Applicants must be able to demonstrate sound judgement, with the ability to critically analyse a wide range of information and make evidence-based, strategic decisions. In addition, you need excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to gain the confidence of colleagues within your organisation and of its stakeholders

For the Deputy Chair role, you must have: 

An ability to chair board meetings of a significant national organisation, and support and sustain an effective board with solid appreciation of good governance arrangements. 

For the member role it is not essential, but we welcome applicants who have a background in data/AI.

The Deputy Chair role is remunerated at the standard rate of £14,000, for a time commitment of 35 days per annum.  Members are remunerated at a standard rated of £8,000, for a time commitment of 20 days per annum.  Ministers have determined the length of appointment, which may be for up to a maximum of 3 years.
